Self-reflection of artists, self-reflection of art to lead and to oppress, to have one’s plan dissolved without control into mayhem, artificial masks and hazards. Schubert’s Trout Quintet and a finale beyond the edge.

Caribaldi, an aging ringmaster, in his last gesture of obstinate desire not to sink to the bottom. He directs from above and tries with all his might to squeeze from his obliging, bent puppets-artistes a brazen performance. A genius surrounded with dilettantes, or a psychopathic monster?

Artists should do all they can to leave the stage while they are still strong. A habit is an artiste’s second nature. A challenge for brave seekers of creativity, for the re-finding of energy and joy over actor’s self-accusation. Is now the right time to look into the mirror of one’s authoritative artistic path? What can be seen in it? Words and phrases and reverse somersaults paint in this “tragicomedy“ by the Austrian scandalist Thomas Bernhard an uncompromising picture of artistic cruelty.
